A mid 17th century workbox

circa 1650
With embroidered ivory silk worked in mainly long, short and satin stitches with coloured silks designed with scenes from the story of Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus taken from the Old Testament Book of Esther, the two front doors open to reveal three drawers, the lid, with removable mirror, rises to show compartments and sections with hidden drawers and two glass bottles, the whole lined with salmon pink silk and stencilled silver grey paper, with pad feet and key clasp, English, 34cm wide, 27cm deep, 20cm high (13in wide, 10.5in deep, 7.5in high).
