A rare Isleworth tart pan, circa 1768-75

Of simple conical shape with a gently flaring rim, painted in dark blue with the 'Man with Speared Bird' pattern of a simple Chinese landscape, a 'Mansfield' border around the rim, three simple wispy branches on the under-rim, 12cm diam (chipped)

Footnotes

Provenance: Maurice and Lyn Hillis Collection. Illustrated by Dr Trevor Darling, 'Take Six Small Tart Pans', ECC Trans., Vol 19, part 1, p. 127, fig 43. Another example is exhibited by Roderick Jellicoe, Eight Days in June 2010, catalogue p. 14, fig. 9. This shape and pattern is clearly copied from a popular design used at Worcester. An example attributed to Bow is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by Darling, op cit, fig. 20. The present lot shows a number of Isleworth features and while shards of tart pans were found at Hounslow and two other patterns have been attributed, at present there is no archaeological evidence of the Man With Speared Bird pattern to confirm the attribution.
