Footnotes
Provenance: the Pinewood Collection, sold in these rooms 31 October 2001, lot 51. This rare shape occurs in a few instances with direct copies of Japanese and Chinese patterns. It is possible that this blue and white version was intended as the stand for a broth bowl but its original purpose is not known. The use of hand painted border sprays with a printed centre illustrates the difficulty Worcester experienced with their early printing and their inability to apply printed borders.
