A Worcester small plate, circa 1765

The plain round shape with a narrow border, transfer printed in the centre with the 'Fence' pattern, the border hand painted with three floral trails alternating with winged insects, between narrow lines, 19.3cm diam, crescent mark

Footnotes

Provenance: the Pinewood Collection, sold in these rooms 31 October 2001, lot 51. This rare shape occurs in a few instances with direct copies of Japanese and Chinese patterns. It is possible that this blue and white version was intended as the stand for a broth bowl but its original purpose is not known. The use of hand painted border sprays with a printed centre illustrates the difficulty Worcester experienced with their early printing and their inability to apply printed borders.
