A massive Worcester tureen and cover, circa 1754-5

Of lobed oval shape with boldly modelled twin handles, the cover with a stalk handle moulded with flowers and leaves at the terminals, painted in blue with the 'Two-Level Fence and Rock' pattern of prunus and peonies growing from fanciful 'holed rocks' in front of a fence, the full design repeated on both sides of the tureen and twice on the cover, within elaborate panelled diaper borders, the interior of the tureen with a further spray of peony branches growing from rockwork, 40cm wide, workman's mark (one handle restored, minor chips) (2)

Footnotes

Provenance: The Susi and Ian Sutherland Collection, sold in these rooms 3 October 2007, lot 186. This rare tureen is remarkable in terms of its size and the complexity of the decoration. Another covered tureen of the same shape in The Museum of Worcester Porcelain is illustrated by John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), colour plate 90, p 342. The same basic form with moulded panels and a dolphin finial is also recorded. See Branyan, French and Sandon (1981/1989), pattern I.A.11. The 'Two-Level Fence and Rock' pattern was used on large-scale productions, including a punchpot and an octagonal serving dish illustrated by Bernard Watney, English Blue and White Porcelain (1973), pl 28B.
