A large Worcester teapot and cover, circa 1754-55

Of generous size with cruciform panel moulding, the domed cover with onion-shaped finial, painted in dark blue with the 'Prunus Fence' pattern of Oriental plants growing from gnarled roots and a small, stylised fence, the complete design repeated on the reverse, the cover with a single trailing prunus branch and an insect, 16.5cm high, TF workman's mark on the base and IH or JH on the cover (cracked, the spout damaged and mounted in silver long ago, tip of finial chipped) (2)

Footnotes

Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), colour pl. 43 and pl. 209. Several different versions of moulded lobed teapots were made at Worcester early in the 1750s, of which this is a particularly rare size raised on a most unusual high footrim.
