A fine Worcester bell-shaped mug, circa 1756-58

Of generous bell shape with a grooved handle, delicately painted in blue with the 'Walk in the Garden' pattern, the 'Long Eliza' figure holding a basket and a ruyi sceptre, the boy at her side with a speared bird, birds in the branches of a fine tree on the reverse, 14.7cm high, workman's mark IH or JH

Footnotes

Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Eighteenth Century English Porcelain (1985), colour pl. 1 and pl. 4. Geoffrey has always had a particular fondness for this pattern, which was made over a long period and can be painted in many different ways. The care taken over this particular example is exceptional.

This mug I believe represents the height that this charming but standard design could achieve. The blue is a pleasing tint, the design well placed on the graceful form, the glazing is perfection leaving the blue painting crystal sharp without any blurring or running..... for the record this example cost £800 in June 1981. Dear, yes, but I do not know of a more pleasing example.
Geoffrey Godden, 1985
