Footnotes

Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2007), pls. 143 and 144 and colour pl. 34. The painting on this coffee pot shares affinities with a series of large tureens or covered punch bowls, in particular the example with the 'Mistress and Slave' pattern illustrated by Branyan, French and Sandon (1989), pattern I.A.25A, where a similar standing figure is included. The peacock feather-like motif painted on the spout of this pot provides a link with earlier Lund's Bristol and Limehouse porcelain, such as the octagonal teapot in the Billie Pain Collection sold in these rooms 26 November 2003, lot 89.
