Of ovoid, low-footed form, the S-shape handle with a modelled animal-head thumbrest, the exterior crisply moulded with leaves, plants and scrollwork reserving an oval panel on both sides and a shield cartouche below the lip, painted in blue with the 'Fisherman on a Towering Rock' pattern of detailed Chinese river scenes, the interior with a further scene and floral border sprays, 22.3cm long, two separate workmen's marks including a JH or IH cipher (one minute bruise or perhaps an original firing flaw on the rim)
Footnotes
Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), colour pl. 37 and pls 153-4. Also illustrated by Nicholas Panes, British Porcelain Sauceboats (2009), p. 127, figs 198-199. One of Geoffrey's favourite pieces of early Worcester, this large specimen of what Worcester called a 'panelled boat', complete with animal-head thumbrest, is surprisingly rare.
