A problem sauceboat in Lund's Bristol style, mid 18th century or circa 1980

The large, plain low-footed sauceboat with a sharply moulded handle with very pronounced thumbrest, painted in blue with a scroll-edged landscape panel on both sides, featuring boats, floating rocks, dotted mountain peaks and 'three dot motifs', a peony spray inside and beneath the spout, 22.3cm long (crazing cracks)

Footnotes

Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), pl. 707-8, and 18th Century English Porcelain, A Selection from the Godden Reference Collection (1985), pl. 47. Also illustrated by Nicholas Panes, British Porcelain Sauceboats (2009), fig. 179 (as Lund's or possibly experimental Worcester). This is one of three related sauceboats that appeared on the market between 1980 and 1982. All were the same shape and type but with quite different subjects within the reserved panels, and different borders. In each case the interior decoration is remarkably close to Limehouse. Two examples accepted as authentic are in the A J Smith Collection, see Simon Spero, Lund's Bristol and Early Worcester Porcelain (2005), p. 75. Curiously, these also combine 'Limehouse' type flower painting inside, with characteristic Lund's painting in the panels. They are more thinly potted than other Lund's Bristol sauceboats and have a brittle quality.
