A Lund's Bristol shell pickle dish, circa 1749-51

Simply moulded in the shape of a scallop shell, painted in bright blue with a 'Long Eliza' figure standing and holding a fan, flanked by a flowering plant and a shrub issuing from a question-mark shaped rock, dotted mountain peaks in the distance, formal leaves painted in the lower corners, 8.8cm high

Footnotes

Provenance: the Billie Pain Collection, sold in these rooms 26 November 2003, lot 102. The figure painted on Bristol leaf or shell pickle dishes is usually shown pointing. A more unusual version shows the figure holding a fan. The dotted mountain peaks are a typical feature of Lunds Bristol and can also be seen on the covered bowl, lot 48.
