A massive Worcester mask jug, circa 1785-90

Of baluster form moulded with overlapping cabbage leaves, the lip in the form of a bearded man wearing a rococo scroll 'crown', printed in bright blue with the Parrot Pecking Fruit pattern, the primary print flanked by fruit sprays, a snail beneath the handle, the cylindrical neck with flower festoons and hexagonal cell borders, 30.2cm high, disguised numeral mark

Footnotes

Geoffrey Godden is photographed holding this jug as the frontispiece to his comprehensive book on English Blue and White Porcelain (2004). This splendid jug epitomises the many qualities of what Geoffrey has long felt to be a neglected period of Worcester porcelain.
