A problem teapot and cover, possibly Isleworth, circa 1765-70

Globular with a pointed mushroom finial, the spout lightly moulded with flutes, the handle very lightly ribbed and with a heart shaped terminal, painted in dark blue with the Cannonball pattern with a diaper border, 13.3cm high (cover chipped) (2)

Footnotes

The heart shaped handle terminal has long been held as a sure sign of Bow porcelain and no examples have been found on the Isleworth site. The present example bears a popular pattern made by many factories, but the heavy painting and use of cross-hatching are features suggestive of Isleworth. The moulded handle section and lightly moulded spout relates to an enamelled teapot from the Sutherland Collection, lot 313, illustrated by Massey, Pearce and Howard, Isleworth Pottery and Porcelain (2003), p. 106 as a piece with possible Isleworth characteristics. For another teapot of identical form, also using cross-hatching see Geoffrey Godden, Oriental Export Market Porcelain (1979), pl. 248.
