A problem plate, possibly Isleworth, circa 1765-70

Plain circular with a flat flanged rim in Chinese style, painted in dark blue with a central circular panel of a riverscape including a pagoda and fortifications in the distance, a sampan in the foreground moored by willow and pine trees, the border with alternate daisy and peony sprigs and a diaper rim, 23.2cm diam (a fine hairline in the rim)

Footnotes

This plate and others of related type had been attributed to Bow prior to the discovery of a few small fragments on the Isleworth site. In Roy Howard's paper, Isleworth Pottery, Recognition at Last?, ECC Trans., vol. 16, part 3, the shards are shown on p.366, figs. 71 and 72 together with an apparently matching plate. This plate, which is also illustrated by Massey, Pearce and Howard, Isleworth Pottery and Porcelain (2003), p. 57, fig. 86, shows a more detailed version of the central panel. While it is possible the present plate is a Bow version of the design, the painting does show many Isleworth features, in particular the use of cross-hatching for the willow tree.
