Footnotes
Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Blue Printed Derby, Derby Porcelain International Society Journal 6, 2009, pls 9-15, pps 177-178, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), pls 268 and 269, and colour plate 55, Gilbert Bradley (ed), Ceramics of Derbyshire (1978), pl 382, p 239, and Donald Towner, ECC Trans, Vol 6, Pt 3, pl 188b. Provenance: Ernest Allman Collection, sold by Sotheby's 12 January 1965, lot 109, Norman Stretton Collection, sold in these rooms on 14 September 1994, lot 149 and discussed by him in A Ceramic Conumdrum; A Porcelain Tureen from Cockpit Hill, Antique Collecting July 1975. Based on contemporary advertisements, it seems likely that porcelain was made at the Cockpit Hill Pottery in Derby. The present lot bears little resemblance to the porcelains made at the main Nottingham Road site, making an attribution to Cockpit Hill more likely. The cover bears patch marks and the printed floral garlands also appear on the Duesbury Derby porcelains, see the sauceboat lot 14 in this sale. This suggests that Richard Holdship was involved in providing engraved copper plates for both factories.
