A rare Lowestoft mug, circa 1763-65

With a globular body crisply moulded above the foot with a band of stylised leaves, a band of triangles around the shoulder, the cylindrical neck with formal leaves on a 'seeded' ground above a finely turned band, the delicately potted scrolled handle with thumbrest, painted in blue on both sides with a comical bird perched upon a flowering branch, a foliate band below the exterior rim, a bolder scrolled border inside, 9.8cm high, indistinct painter's numeral inside footrim

A slightly later but similar mug is illustrated by Christopher Spencer, Early Lowestoft (1981), figure 115, p 94. Another is illustrated by Sheenah Smith, Lowestoft Porcelain in Norwich Castle Museum, Vol I (1975), no 215. The present lot carries a more delicately potted handle, faceted and with an inner spur above the lower terminal. The fine quality of the potting continues with the crisply moulded and turned borders
