An important Lowestoft flask, circa 1780

Thinly potted and of flattened circular form with a cylindrical neck and slightly thickened rim, painted in blue with a ship-building scene, the boat flying two flags, a workman on deck and another on the beach beside it, the reverse with four ships sailing in choppy waters, the largest three-masted, its rigging carefully depicted, within borders of scrolls and husks, 14cm high (crazing and slight staining, rim chip)

Also illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Lowestoft Porcelains (1985), colour plate 3, p 40 and pl 185, p 146 where the author suggests that the painter was perhaps Richard Powles, whose obituary in the Monthly Magazine of February 1808 states that he was taken on at the Lowestoft factory as a boy. His name is associated with a number of enamelled pieces of Lowestoft which relate to his watercolour drawings. A circular tablet is recorded with figures adapted from Fontaine's Fables 'The Princess betrothed to the King of Garba'. This bears the initials 'R P'. See Geoffrey Godden, op cit, pps 159-60 for further discussion. Examples of enamelled decoration attributed to Powles are illustrated by Godden, op cit at pls 159 and 160, p 128. The ship building scene is presumably on a local beach and is a fascinating record of this activity, enhanced by the fine quality of the underglaze blue painting. A number of Lowestoft flasks are recorded, found with names and dates or painted with special views, suggesting that they were made to special order. Some unglazed fragments of flasks were found on the factory site. An example of the same form as the present lot is recorded with the date 1778 and there are others dated 1782, 1790 and 1798
