An important Lowestoft cane handle, circa 1760

The sides painted in blue with a flowering stem, an insect, an island and two tiny figures in a small boat, the upper surface with a comical bird in flight beside a flowering plant issuing from rockwork, 4.7cm high

No other Lowestoft cane handle appears to have been recorded. The flower painting is closely related to that on an important Hughes type bowl in Norwich Castle Museum dated 1761 and illustrated by Christopher Spencer, op cit, fig 4, p 21.
