A very rare Lowestoft wall pocket, circa 1758-60

In the form of a cornucopia, moulded in high relief and hand finished with scrollwork, shells above and below a panel painted in blue with a Chinaman riding a horse, flanked by willow and palm trees, the lower section moulded with overlapping leaves picked out in blue, the flat back pierced with holes for suspension, 22.6cm high (rim chips)

Footnotes

Illustrated by Christopher Spencer, Early Lowestoft (1981), fig 92, p 80 and by Geoffrey Godden, Lowestoft Porcelains (1985), pl 42, p 58. This lot exhibits early features such as hand-finishing to the moulded details and the clear, wet-looking glaze also seen on the Lowestoft basket sold in these rooms on 14 April 2010, lot 219. The shape appears to have been copied from Bow. See Bernard Watney, English Blue and White Porcelains of the 18th Century (1973), pl 15B for the Bow versions and pl 74B for a Lowestoft pair, slightly later in date than the present lot. A further pair of Lowestoft examples is illustrated by Christopher Spencer, op cit, fig 91, p 79. Interestingly, both the Bow and Lowestoft versions have different modelling on the left and right hand versions. Several unglazed cornucopia fragments were found on the Lowestoft factory site.
