An important Lowestoft spoon tray, circa 1757-60

Of deep 'shuttle' shape with fluted sides and a delicately shaped rim, the interior painted in blue with a group of four water birds beside a flowering plant issuing from rockwork, one in flight, one perched on a branch and two below, an island visible in the distance, the sides with scattered sprigs, 18.5cm wide (minute rim chips)

Footnotes

Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Lowestoft Porcelains (1985), colour plate 5, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), colour plate 73 and plate 328, and by Christopher Spencer, Early Lowestoft (1981), fig 146, p 114, where he describes it as his favourite piece of English porcelain. A later example of the same shape but with a simplified rim is illustrated at fig 145, p 113. The painting on this early piece is exceptional, the details finely 'pencilled' and highlighted with a blue wash. The slightly pink glaze and almost tin-glazed appearance is typical of very early Lowestoft productions
