A Derbyshire bowl, attributed to Cockpit Hill, circa 1770-75

Of thinly potted plain form, the interior printed in blue with the 'Fence' print, the border with five floral garlands, the exterior with the 'Plantation', 'Fence' and 'Cantilevered Garden House' prints, 20cm diam, six faint 'separator' marks on the footrim (cracked and crazed)

Footnotes

This bowl is discussed by Geoffrey Godden, Blue Printed Derby, Derby Porcelain International Society Journal 6, 2009, p 173. It is decorated with a total of eight prints which also occur on porcelain and pottery associated with Derby. The floral garlands and 'Fence' prints appear on the tureen and cover, lot 15 in this sale, also attributed to Cockpit Hill, and some of the floral garlands are also seen on Derby porcelain, including the previous lot. This belongs to an interesting class which sometimes have thin 'separator' marks rather than the patch marks more usually associated with the products of the main Nottingham Road factory. For a discussion of these, see Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), p 219. The 'Plantation', 'Fence' and 'Cantilevered Garden House' prints are found on Worcester porcelain.
