A rare Longton Hall spoon tray, circa 1755

Of cruciform shape, painted in blue with the 'Folly' pattern, a pyramid set amongst trees and plants, a gentleman with a walking stick to the left sheltering beneath the foliage of a 'sponged' tree, a church in the distance, 16.2cm wide (fine crack)

Footnotes

Provenance: The Watney Collection, Pt 1, lot 72. Bought by Bernard Watney from Godden of Worthing for £9 in 1948. Bought back by Geoffrey Godden in 1999, for rather more. Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, English Blue and White Porcelain (2004), colour pl. 1 and pl. 8 and Bernard Watney, Longton Hall Porcelain (1957), pl 64B. Both the shape and pattern are unique to Longton Hall. Examples decorated in underglaze blue are particularly rare. The inspiration for the 'Folly' pattern is probably English delftware, suggested by the use of sponged trees.
