Beauty

Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk; featuring a courtesan in profile beside a blossoming cherry tree, her blue uchikake patterned with flowers; bearing the signature Chobunsai Eishi with seal Eishi (stains).

Footnotes

Provenance: ex-collection Francena and Frank E. Hart, by descent to the present owner

This painting appears to be a copy based on the central image from a hanging scroll triptych by Eishi, once also owned by the Harts. Known as Snow, Moon, and Cherry Blossoms, the triptych is one of a group of ukiyo-e paintings from the Hart Collection now in the Burke Collection in New York. See Miyeko Murase, Bridge of Dreams: The Mary Griggs Burke Collection of Japanese Art (New York: Metropolitan Museum, 2000), no. 151. A small catalogue of the Hart collection, published for a 1962 exhibition at the Norton Gallery in Palm Beach, includes the Eishi triptych but not the version offered in this lot.
