Fine Emerald and Diamond Ring

Caraiva, Bahia, Brazil
Located in the mountain range of Serra De Jacobina, the little mining village of Carnaiba in the state of Bahia is home to several small mines which were the feature of a Gems and Gemologyarticle, Summer Edition 2009, volume 14. Working at depths of 380 meters, the miners must excavate an abundance of inferior, opaque goods to obtain anything of quality.

This particularly beautiful, rectangular-cut stone, weighing approximately 4.3 carats, with its perfect shade of brilliant green, unmodified by yellow, and its exceptional transparency, was obtained directly from the miner himself. The rarity of such precious material is underscored by the miner’s own comment: “We've been mining for several years and have only hit a few small pockets of this quality. This stone has no treatment what so ever”. Flanked by a cluster of three pear-shaped diamonds to each shoulder, having a total combined weight of 0.92 carats, mounted in 18K white gold, size 6.
