Alto Ligonha, near Nampula, Mozambique
The alluvial stones which were found in this region in approximately 2004 gave rise to a new palette of tourmaline colors such as the world had not seen exactly before. The present cushion-shaped stone is unusual even for this region as it possesses a deeply saturated color which is difficult to describe—a rich raspberry red, unmodified by brown or any secondary color—at once similar to the hue of some spinels yet different, deeper than that of fine rhodochrosite and less strawberry in tone—in short, exotic and definitely Mozambique. Given its rich depth of saturation as well as its excellent clarity and luster, this stone would form an excellent ring stone and a striking conversation piece sure to engage the most discerning collector. Weighing approximately 24.50 carats and measuring 19.5 x 14.8 x 11.5mm
