Mulga Rush, Grawin, near Lightning Ridge, Australia
Designed by Jenni Brammal, fabricated by Gerd Schulz
An elegant pendant whose design was inspired by the shape and color play of the large Lightning Ridge black opal which it features. Of a large size, weighing approximately 18.27 carats, the opal displays a multi-colored ribbon pattern, with ribbons of color rolling through red-orange, gold, green and blue depending upon the angle of observation. A published piece, this opal is pictured on page 40 of the book Opal: The Phenomenal Gemstone, a copy of which accompanies the lot.
The pendant was designed by Jenni Brammall and made by master goldsmith Gerd Schulz in Lightning Ridge, Australia. A diamond-set spiral bail recalls both the proboscis of a butterfly, and dewdrops sparkling as the insect lands on swaying plant fronds. The back of the 18K yellow gold setting is engraved which a motif which echoes the ribbon pattern in the opal and contains a pierced "window" revealing the reverse side of the solid black opal. Schmetterling is mounted and accompanied by an 18K yellow gold Italian omega chain, length 18in.
