Faceted by August Mayer, Idar Oberstein, Germany
Rhodonite from Conselheiro Lafaiete
Minas Gerais, Brazil
A mineral typically available in aggregate form, it is rarely ever seen in transparent crystals. Specimens of rhodonite are typically pink and opaque, with heavy black veining. In the lapidary arts, the stone is typically used for ornamental purposes and carving of sculptures. One of the largest pieces of this material ever to have been cut, the present gemstone is very rare due to its exceptional transparency for the species. Characterized by a vibrant cherry-red, due to manganese oxide, it has been fashioned as an oval-cut. One of the harder gems to facet, only a few lapidaries are capable of performing the task. An excellent stone which would form a notable addition to any serious collection. One of the harder gems to facet, only a few lapidaries are capable of performing the task. An excellent stone which would form a notable addition to any serious collection. Weighing 5.61 carats and measuring 15.0 x 8.4 x 5.0mm
