Kunene River, Namibia
Popularly called “mandarin” garnet as the color resembles that of the citrus fruit, this variety of spessartite garnet is unmodified by brown or yellow. Named after its original source in Spessart, Germany the best deposits are presently found in Africa. The present stone comes from a very sought-after locality, much rarer than the Nigerian deposit. Spessartite garnets of a reddish-orange color with excellent clarity normally do not exceed a few carats in weight. Generally, large gems of spessartite garnet are either dark with unattractive color and/or inclusions. However, this large gem is a very rare example with its sought-after orange hue, superb brilliance and luster. Truly a stone for the collector. Weighing approximately 16.16 carats and measuring 15.0 x 11.2 x 9.5mm
