Colorful Suite of Eleven Garnets from World Localities

"Garnet" is the name given to a group of chemically and physically similar minerals. A very small number of garnets are pure and flawless enough to be cut as gemstones. The majority of garnet mining is for massive garnet that is crushed and used to make abrasives. The different varieties of garnet have different metal ions, such as iron, aluminum, magnesium and chromium. The present suite of garnets consists of all oval-cuts of approximately similar carats size including: hessonite from Mexico, weighing 0.88 cts; tsavorite from Tanzania, weighing 0.93 cts; spessartite from Nigeria, weighing 0.95 cts; color change garnet from Sri Lanka, weighing 0.92 cts; demantoid garnet from Iran, weighing 0.88 cts; Malaya garnet from Tanzania, 0.87 cts; topazolite garnet from Mexico, weighing 0.89 carats; rhodolite garnet from Tanzania, weighing 0.97 carats; almandine garnet from India, weighing 1.10 cts; pyrope garnet from Arizona, weighing 1.09 cts; Grandite garnet from Mali, weighing 0.88 cts.
