Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
Lustrous, large rhombohedral crystals of calcite, with a pleasing bluish-green coloration from included aurichalcite cover the surface of this fine large cabinet specimen on sculptural dark brown gossan matrix. Although there is some minor damage to the periphery, most crystals are intact. From a small new find of 2009, these blue calcites are more richly infused with aurichalcite inclusions than previous examples. The occurrence is rare and seems unique to this mine, in large crystals. Even historically, only small examples have been found here, and this is one of the largest specimens of the 2009 finds, from the private collection of one of the dealers who imported the material when it came out. No more have been found since, and even small specimens have realized high prices in the mineral market. This, however, is a top size and quality level for the find, measures 6 x 6 x 2 ½ in.
Offered on a custom-fitted acrylic base.
