Designed and fabricated by Mark Doolittle
One in a series of handmade wood clocks created by the artist, this particular example exhibits the technique of pierced relief carving. Garden Clock features the design element of the reverse curve—a form embodied in nature from flowers to the female figure. Utilizing a single block of exotic Mexican hardwood, Caesalpinia platyloba, prized for its beautiful luster and rich orange-to-red tones which deepen with age, the clock is secured to a base of Arizona sandstone, inset into an oval piece of Caesalpinia platyloba, while the hands are carved from an African hardwood known as bubinga. The piece is equally attractive from both front and back, and a small inset ammonite decorates the reverse side concealing the quartz mechanism, height 16.5in.
