Iron, fine octahedrite
Gibeon, Great Nama Land, Namibia
Thousands of years ago an enormous iron mass (or masses) slammed into Earth's upper atmosphere before exploding above the edge of Africa's Kalahari Desert. Local tribesmen located the following specimens with the aid of metal detectors, not quite in the tradition of their ancestors who sought the "metal stones" for spear points and other tools. When cut and etched, Gibeon meteorites exhibit an extremely handsome fine-octahedral pattern that reveals the crystalline structure of its metallic alloys-a fate which that should never befall this superior specimen. Featuring numerous sockets and ridges in the tradition of the best Gibeon meteorites, this is a captivating, highly-animated example, measures 161 x 119 x 67mm (6.33 x 4.66 x 2.5 inches) and weighs 1898 grams (4.2 pounds).
