Dosidicus gigas
Northern California
Giant squid have fueled the nightmares of many a science fiction writer and, while they are indeed deadly and very aggressive, there are only a few known cases of Humboldt Squid killing a human, the most recent being an attack on three divers who were killed in the Sea of Cortez in December, 2009, when they were surrounded by a large school of feeding squid. Collected off the coast of Northern California, here is fine beak from a very large Humboldt Squid individual, accompanied by four spiked tentacle sucker rings, which, in life, covered the tentacles of the squid and were used to drag the prey to within range of the terrible beak. Mounted in a plexiglass display. Measures 3 ¼ x 3 x 2 1/4in
