Cave Bear Arm

Ursus spelaeus
Pleistocene
Romania

Cave bears inhabited Europe, Eastern Europe and parts of Asia until their extinction at the end of the last Ice Age. As shown by the archaeological record, they were contemporaries of modern humans: many cave sites show signs of competition between cave bears and humans as the two species battled for shelter for thousands of years. The cave bear’s body displayed a relatively long neck on a barrel-shaped torso, with limbs rather short but very powerful as compared to those of the living brown bear. The present complete cave bear arm specimen exemplifies the massive morphology of the cave bear’s upper limb. Mounted on a custom stand with stone base. Measures 38in
