Marine Mammal Tooth

Desmostylus hesperus
Miocene
Sharks Tooth Hill, California

Desmostylus is an extinct hippopotamus-like marine animal. Probably amphibious, it lived in shallow coastal waters, perhaps feeding on seaweed exposed during low tides. The creature’s jaws were elongated and displayed forward-facing tusks. The shape of the present tooth specimen attests to its herbivorous habit. It has been prepared on its original matrix. Measures 8 x 4.5 x 4; Specimen measures 3.5in
