Notelops Fish in Nodule

Notelops brama
Early Cretaceous
Santana Formation, Ceará, Brazil

The renowned Santana Formation, named after the village of Santana do Cariri, lies at the base of the Araripe Plateau. These sediments have earned the designation of Lagerstätte due to an exceedingly well-preserved and diverse fossil faunal assemblage, which includes some twenty-five species of fossil fishes. This fast-swimming predatory species primitively resembles modern tarpons if only in a functional manner. Beautifully preserved details and superb preparation recommend the present specimen. Measures 72 centimeters
