Brazilian Fish in Nodule

Vinctifer comptoni
Early Cretaceous
Santana Formation, Ceará, Brazil

While the South Atlantic Ocean was opening up, forming a long, narrow sea, a shallow inland sea, located in what is now known as South America, supported abundant fish species. The Vinctifer, a ray-finned fish, is a member of the family Aspidorhynchidae, which lived for nearly 95 million years before becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. As the present specimen illustrates, this species is identified by the shortened predentary and greatly extended premaxillary snout without teeth. Superb three-dimensional preparation and fine preservation in the bar scales and fins distinguish this Cretaceous fossil fish. Measures 70 centimeters
