Fish Aspiration

Mioplosus labracoides
Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming

Mioplosus is considered an uncommon species of the Green River Formation. Making this piece even more unusual is the fact that this fish died in the act of unsuccessful predation. Called an aspiration, this presentation of predator and prey captures a rare Eocene moment; the individual choked on its prey, died and sank to the bottom of the ancient lake in which it was ultimately entombed in limestone. Matrix measures 9 1/2 x 7 5/8in, Specimen measures 7in
