Phareodus encaustus
Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming
An extraordinarily large and superbly well-preserved ancient piranha relative is seen in the gorgeous golden-toned limestone matrix of its origin - the F2 Horizon of the famous Green River Formation. Countless needle-like teeth attest to the carnivorous habit of this top predator from the freshwater lake system, which existed 51 million years ago in what is now the high desert of Wyoming. Phareodus encaustus is an uncommon species for this geologic formation. Measures 33 ½ x 18in, Fish length 23 3/4in
