Placenticeras costatum
Cretaceous
Bear Paw Formation, Alberta, Canada
A superlative example of the uniquely beautiful Canadian opalescent ammonites displays uncommon blue coloration, along with the bright reds, oranges, golds and greens more frequently seen in these superbly colorful ammonites. Coveted by collectors the world over, the stunning palette of these specimens is produced by light interference by the shell's layers. The resulting brilliant material is known as ammolite, one of only two fossil materials classified as gemstones (the other being amber.) This beautifully inflated and complete example displays intense color and superb preservation on both sides. Offered on a custom oak display stand. Measures 16.5 x 13in
