Ceraurus pleurexanthemus, Calymeme senaria, Homocystis
Middle Ordovician
Verulam Formation, Neuville Quarry, Neuville Province, Quebec, Canada
Trilobites are an extinct class of arthropod that existed only in the Paleozoic Era, from 542 to 251 million years ago. Among the most prized are the mass mortality specimens, such as the example offered here, which occur due to prehistoric cataclysmic events, such as undersea landslides, or volcanic activity. Fossil samples showing these associations are exceptionally rare. This 460-million-year-old specimen exhibits an incredible diversity of Paleozoic sea life, including 9 Ceraurus trilobites and 1 Calymene trilobite, 22 brachiopod shells, 2 cystoids, crinoid stems, and numerous other fragmentary remains. Measures 7x7in
