Large Polished Petrified Wood Stump

Araucarioxylon arizonicum
Triassic
Chinle Formation, Arizona

The petrification of wood occurs underground when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals in the plant's cells and as its cellulose decays a stone mould forms in its place. Typically managanese oxides in the water create the black hues in petrified wood. The present stump of sizable proportions exhibits predominantly black hues with highlights of gray, white and red. With excellent preservation of bark texturing to the exterior, contour polished top, measures 20 x 20 x 25in.
