A pair of Japanese miniature lacquer chests of drawers

Meiji Period
The first with hinged doors lacquered in black and gold with birds and branches, the interior with three drawers painted with flowers and butterflies; the second with doors lacquered in black and gold with birds and flowers, the interior with three drawers painted with birds and flowering branches. Each 15.2cm high x 15cm wide x 7.8cm wide (2).

The Rev. Lord Augustus FitzClarence was the illegitimate son of King William IV, and had the living at Mapledurham in Oxfordshire. In common with all the King's children he received a stipend of £10,000 per annum, a courtesy which was later continued by Queen Victoria.
