Footnotes

Provenance:
Acquired in 1972

Literature:
Hoffmeister 1999, II, no. 95

Exhibited:
Hamburg, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, 1999-2009

Although this shape was probably conceived as a brush back, a similar example, recorded in 18th-century inventories of the Margraves of Baden, shows that they could be put to other uses, such as the base for a silk bag (Sotheby's Baden-Baden, 6 October 1995, lot 811).
