A very rare Meissen saucer

circa 1723
Painted by J.G. Höroldt with a masked figure from the Commedia dell'Arte, on a grassy base flanked by flowering plants, within three iron-red circles, gilt-edged rim, 12.8cm diam.

From the same service as the preceding lot; see footnote. The same masked figure appears on the coffee pot from the service, alongside a chimney sweep. The painting on both pieces has been attributed to Höroldt himself (Pietsch 1996, nos. 13 and 23). A similar figure with a slightly different costume is depicted on a beaker belonging to another early Meissen service decorated with Italian Comedy figures (Wildtraut/Buchen 1997, ill. 6, no. 7).
