A Highly Decorated Swept-Hilt Rapier
The Blade Early 17th Century

With tapering double-edged blade (rust patinated overall) of flattened hexagonal section with central double fuller at the forte pierced with slots and circles, stamped with inscriptions and struck with a man-in-the-moon mark on each side, fluted ricasso, steel hilt of flat bars pierced, chiselled and gilt to represent chain and comprising two rings on the outside, three diagonal curved bars merging into one on the inside and sparsely encrusted with silver foliage, rear quillon, the downturned end with circular terminal, knuckle-guard with similar terminal and each chiselled on both sides with a male profile bust from Classical antiquity within a gilt border, the knuckle-guard and side-rings each interrupted by an oval panel chiselled with martial trophies and a reclining female figure picked out in silver, all within gilt borders, large ovoidal pommel en suite, inlaid with symmetrical silver strapwork and chiselled on each side with a standing male figure, and spirally twist wooden grip bound with twisted steel wire
