A Very Fine Chiselled And Gilt Spanish Dagger In The Manner Of The Zuloaga Family
Late 19th Century

In the Renaissance manner, with highly polished tapering double-edged blade etched along each side with symmetrical scrolling foliage against a granular ground, the forte on one side etched 'Fabrica De Toledo Artilleria' centred on crossed cannons, a crown above, blued steel hilt comprising scrolled foliate quillons each entwined with a serpent, its scales picked-out in gold, shaped quillon-block inset on each side with a silver panel, one cast and chased with a Classical trophy of arms, and the other with a female mask between cornucopia, both against a punched ground, swelling grip chiselled on each side with symmetrical foliage involving satyr masks and a pair of foliate scrolls with monster-head terminals, centred on a raised medial band chiselled at its centre with a bearded helmeted profile head within a gilt medallion, a further bearded human mask on each side, rounded pommel chiselled on both sides with a bearded satyr's mask between pierced and chiselled female demi-figures each holding their arms above their heads, and gilt foliate button, in original blued steel scabbard chiselled along each side with pairs of naked male figures, a human mask, a winged demi-figure, a winged cherub's head and a pair of foliate monsters, the locket and chape areas inlaid with chased gold foliage and borders, the former involving a winged monster within an oval on a cartouche on one side, all the decoration picked out in gold against gilt punched grounds, and in fine condition throughout
