A Fine North European Riding Sword
Dated 1647

With bright curved single-edged blade double-edged at the point and with three narrow fullers along the back on each side, the forte struck with profile bishop's head mark of Peter Munich of Solingen and etched and gilt on both sides with differing mounted horsemen dated 'Anno 1647' between, surmounted by a foliated cartouche inscribed 'Pro Aris Et Foc[is]' on one side and 'Soli Deo Glor[ia]' on the other, gilt-iron hilt comprising up-bent heart-shaped side-rings each filled with a plate finely pierced with stars and quatrefoils, the outer ring rising up to a scroll, the inner ring extended at the top to form a thumb-ring, both joined by a scrolled bar at the top to the knuckle-guard with double central swelling and scrolled terminal fitting into the pommel, fig-shaped pommel with button finial, turned and gilt ferrules, original grip bound with twisted silver wire in varying degrees of thickness, and in fine condition retaining some of its original gilding (some light pitting)
