The Naseby Rapier From The Redfern Collection
Circa 1640

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section with central fuller along each side of the forte indistinctly incised 'Clemens Poeler, Solingen', iron hilt comprising shallow cup-guard pierced and chiselled in low relief with punched foliage involving a male head between dolphins on each side, an outer side-ring above chiselled with berries and linked to the knuckle-guard by a scrolled bar chiselled with foliage and a monster's head, knuckle-guard cut with lines, screwed to the pommel, and with central feature en suite with the guard, straight quillons with spherical terminals also en suite, globular pommel chiselled and punched with foliage, and spirally-grooved wooden grip bound with twisted copper wire (some rust patination and light pitting)

Sotheby & Co. London, Catalogue Of The Extensive Collection Formed By The Late W.B. Redfern, Esq., J.P., D.L. and sold by Order of his step-daughter, Lady Ryan of Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk, Comprising Arms And Armour Also Works Of Art And Bygones, 20-21 June 1934, lot 89. The footnote reads 'Stated to have been carried by a Cavalier on the day of "fatal" Naseby, June 14th, 1645, when the army of King Charles I suffered defeat. The owner of the rapier, a wounded Cavalier, escaped from the field of Broadmoor and found refuge in the house of a farmer in the neighbourhood, where he was sheltered and cared for till he was sufficiently recovered to take his departure in safety, leaving his rapier with his host, whose descendants the weapon was always treasured until it passed in to the possession of Mr. Redfern in 1912.'
