A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century, Probably German Or Italian

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened diamond section with central fuller over each side of the forte incised with the sacred monogram 'IHS' and extending through the tapering rectangular ricasso, iron hilt of rounded bars comprising slightly off-set recurved quillons swelling towards the tips, downcurved arms, the tips linked by two concentric side-rings, the larger upper one linked at the top by a curved bar to the knuckle-guard, and inner trifurcated bars linked to the knuckle-guard above, barrel-shaped pommel with button, and spirally-grooved wooden grip bound with twisted iron wire (some surface rust patination)
