With tapering double-edged blade of slightly hollowed flattened diamond section retaining traces of original blueing and decorated towards the tip along one side with the etched figure of a highlander, a trophy of arms including a shield bearing the Royal Standard of Scotland, the Order of the Thistle above a garland and beneath foliage including a pair of thistles, and along half its length from the forte with etched and gilt foliage, a trophy of arms, the royal coat of arms and motto of Scotland beneath a baldachin, and entwined sprigs of laurel and oak, the other side towards the tip with foliage, Britannia and Unicorn, and the badge of the Black Watch within foliage surmounted by a crowned thistle beneath a baldachin, and with a gilt panel etched with the presentation inscription in gaelic 'Dón Uasal urramach Alastoir Mac Gregoir Moireach O Gath Bhuidhin Rioghail Ghaidheallaich Dhùn Eidean mar chomhara air am mor mheas d'an Ceud Cheannárd.' between entwined sprigs of laurel and oak and with thistles at the forte, the latter above 'Warranted' on a foliated scroll, the hilt comprising iron guard pierced and engraved with thistles between pierced elongated ovals above and below and set with a gilt-copper oval at the centre polychrome enamelled with the shield, crest and motto of MacGregor alias Murray Napier Ruskie (minor repair), pierced rear quillon set with a faceted roundel, large acorn-shaped pommel, and spirally-grooved fishskin-covered grip, in its wooden scabbard covered in black leather with pierced locket, chape and suspension mounts en suite with the blade (some wear), the chape (minor damage) with applied gilt-brass and enamelled badge of the Order of the Thistle on one side, and with two split-rings for suspension

The inscription reads in translation: 'To the honourable gentleman Alastair MacGregor Murray from The Royal Highland Association of Edinburgh as a token of our great esteem for our First Chieftain'
The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland was established in Edinburgh in 1784 as 'The Highland Society of Edinburgh', a society for the improvement of the Highlands. In 1787 it received its first Royal Charter as 'The Highland Society of Scotland at Edinburgh'
The enamelled shield, crest and motto on the hilt were registered at Lyon Court, Edinburgh in 1797
